Dictation

Dictation is designed to sharpen your listening skills and improve your control of sentence structure.

The first time you hear a sentence, a chunk of that sentence is missing, and you have to fill in the blanks. The next time you hear the sentence, the whole sentence is missing. This process helps you slowly build up confidence and mastery over sentence patterns. It also trains your ears to recognize specific sounds.

You can use Dictation independently of iKnow! or as a great way to review sentences that you studied.

Dictation Launch a Demo

Launch Dictation
On any course page, launch Dictation by clicking on the Dictation icon.
Main
In the Main screen, your calendar shows how many times you've studied that course. Click "Start" to begin your lesson.
Quiz
Listen to the sentence and fill in the missing words. The first time you practice there is a picture to give you some help. The second time you're on your own!
Correction
You have a time limit that you have to complete the sentence within. You're allowed to make two mistakes and continue. After the third mistake, you fail the sentence.
Results
View which sentences you got right and wrong and how many mistakes you made. The difficulty level of each sentence is displayed at the bottom of the results screen, and your updated skill level is displayed on the left.
