<non-japanese>

I sometimes wonder if the Japanese are crazy, especially when I read about the unnecessary qualifications Japanese study for as hobbies.

Why do some people want to pass a train timetable knowledge test, a vegetable sommelier test or an otaku exam?

Not everyone takes that kind of test, but many people get a great sense of satisfaction from qualifications, even ones that have no practical use.

I guess there is also some status to be gained from passing a test.
