I studied linguistics in college, but my school didn’t offer a linguistics major, so my degree is in computers. My interest in Japanese started on the job when I was working on a language understanding engine and my team got funding to extend it from English to Spanish and Japanese.
My first Japanese textbook, which for many years sat on the shelf more-or-less unused, was Basic Technical Japanese. In 2003, I got more serious about Japanese and enrolled in night school, where we used the Japanese for Busy People series.
Since then I’ve been looking for a way to solidify my Japanese language skills. My plan is to learn to read, then read whatever I can. To that end I’ve acquired a copy of Kanji in Context and, with the help of iKnow!, am working my way through it.
I’m also using iKnow! to study vocabulary for a novel I am reading in class, Banana Yoshimoto’s Tsugumi
